Kathmandu – Film Development Board to Host Free Screening of Classic Nepali Films for 26th Anniversary

Kathmandu: The Film Development Board of Nepal is set to organize a special retrospective film exhibition titled “Old Is Gold” as part of its 26th anniversary celebrations, showcasing some of the country’s most iconic classic films.

The exhibition aims to preserve and promote Nepal’s cinematic heritage while introducing younger generations to landmark Nepali films. It will run from August 7 to August 12 (Shrawan 22–27) at the Film Development Board premises, Film Board Chowk, Kathmandu.

According to the Board, 10 classic Nepali films will be screened free of charge. The selected films were originally produced by the former Royal Nepal Film Corporation and have since been digitally restored and preserved in the Board’s film archive.

The screening will open on Friday, August 7, with “Aama,” directed by Hira Singh Khatri, at 12:00 p.m.

The schedule includes:

• August 8 (Saturday): Sindur (11:00 a.m.), directed by Prakash Thapa, and Paribartan (2:00 p.m.), directed by Hira Singh Khatri.
• August 9 (Sunday): Manko Bandh (11:00 a.m.), directed by Prakash Thapa, and Ke Ghar Ke Dera (2:00 p.m.), directed by Pradeep Rimal.
• August 10 (Monday): Kumari (12:00 p.m.), directed by Prem Bahadur Basnyat.
• August 11 (Tuesday): Shantideep (11:00 a.m.), directed by Laxminath Sharma, and Hijo Aaja Bholi (2:00 p.m.), directed by Hira Singh Khatri.
• August 12 (Wednesday): Badalindo Aakash (11:00 a.m.), directed by Laxminath Sharma, and Jeevanrekha (2:00 p.m.), directed by Prakash Thapa.

On days featuring a single screening, the show will begin at 12:00 p.m., while on days with two screenings, shows will be held at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Board believes the exhibition will offer audiences—particularly younger viewers—a valuable opportunity to explore Nepal’s social history, culture, language, lifestyle, and the evolution of filmmaking through classic cinema. It also expects the event to encourage greater interest in the preservation, documentation, study, and research of Nepali films.
