Nischal Basnet

Director, writer, actor, and playback singer Nischal Basnet is primarily involved in Nepali cinema. Ranked among the top filmmakers of Nepali cinema, he is highly regarded for “revolutionizing Nepali cinema” with his realistic, gritty, and humorous portrayal of the country’s socioeconomic issues on film. Three feature films have been directed by Basnet: Loot (2012), Talakjung vs. Tulke (2014), and Loot 2 (2017). He appeared in three movies as an actor: Prasad (2018), Dui Rupaiyan (2017), and Kabaddi (2014).

With the release of the crime-thriller Loot, Basnet made his directorial debut. The film went on to become a “cult classic” and the highest grossing Nepali movie ever, changing the course of Nepali cinema history and reviving its fate at the box office. He made a great film debut as a director before making his acting debut in Uma (2013). Later, Basnet directed the critically and financially successful dark comedy Talakjung vs. Tulke. The movie was chosen to represent Nepal in the 88th Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category, but it did not receive a nomination.
