Hari Bansha Acharya is a renowned Nepalese actor, comedian, director, singer, and writer, widely recognized for his method acting and deep contribution to Nepalese entertainment. He is best known as one half of the legendary comedy duo MaHa Jodi, alongside Madan Krishna Shrestha. Together, they revolutionized satire and social commentary through humor. Acharya gained significant acclaim for his role as Arjun in the 1997 patriotic film Balidaan, and for his portrayal of “Hari Bahadur” in the beloved television series Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur. He also wrote and starred in the hit film Shatru Gatey, which became one of the highest-grossing Nepali films.
Born on 13 November 1957 (27 Kartik 2014 BS) in Gairidhara, Kathmandu, to Homanjaya and Ganesh Kumari Acharya, he began his artistic journey in the early 1970s, performing on Radio Nepal and later joining Rastriya Naach Ghar. He met his first wife, Meera, in 1982, with whom he had two sons, Trilok and Mohit. After Meera’s death in 2011 due to heart disease, he married Ramila Pathak in 2012. In 2015, he established The Meera Centre, in memory of his late wife, which provides healthcare and educational services for children under five.
Throughout his decades-long career, Acharya has acted in several popular films like Lovipapi, Silu, Rajamati, Je Bho Ramrai Bho, and Tah Ta Sarhai Bigris Ni Badri. His comedic series such as Lal Purja, Pandra Gatay, Bhakunde Bhoot, and Dashain ko Chyangra remain cultural classics in Nepal. Beyond acting, Acharya has been an influential social activist. He and Shrestha were vocal supporters of the 2006 April Uprising, which led to the end of the monarchy in Nepal. Their social involvement and popularity even led some to suggest them as potential presidential candidates. Hari Bansha Acharya continues to be celebrated as a cultural icon whose work spans entertainment, literature, and social reform.
