Kathmandu: The official trailer of the upcoming Nepali film ‘Halee’, which is set to hit cinemas on Shrawan 22, has been released, offering a powerful look at a story inspired by the deeply rooted social practice of Chhaupadi.
The trailer, launched during a special event on Friday and released through OSR Digital’s official YouTube channel, highlights the discrimination faced by women during menstruation. It portrays a young girl being prevented from attending school because she is menstruating and depicts the belief that women should not see the faces of their father or other male family members for 21 days, reflecting traditional practices still found in parts of western Nepal.
Speaking at the trailer launch, producer Pooja Gurung said the film is based on a true story and carries a strong message about social transformation.
“A single ‘Halee’ can change the face of the nation. The country cannot be transformed through political speeches alone,” she said.
Director and writer Om Pratik explained that the film was inspired by real incidents from western Nepal, where girls are isolated during their first menstruation. He stressed that expanding social awareness is more important than academic qualifications when it comes to changing harmful traditions.
Produced by Pooja Gurung and Jasmine Shrestha, Halee is written and directed by Om Pratik, who also appears in a lead role. The cast includes Pramod Deep, Sujata Thapa, Bidya Karki, Saroj Khanal, Aruna Karki, Arjun Gurung, Nabin Shrestha, Kanchan Dulal, Kamal Gaule, and Bishal Pahadi.
The film has already drawn attention with its promotional song featuring popular actresses Deepa Shree Niraula, Pooja Sharma, and Mithila Sharma, which has received a positive response from audiences.
Jointly produced by Japura Films Production and Shubh Chirayu Films, Halee aims to deliver a socially relevant and revolutionary message, emphasizing that meaningful change in society can begin with a single individual.
The soundtrack features music by veteran composers Shambhujit Baskota, Babul Giri, and Krishna Bhardwaj. The film’s main song, written by Jasmine Shrestha and composed by Babul Giri, is performed by Babul Giri and acclaimed singer Shanti Shree Pariyar.
The film’s executive producer is Arjun Bhusal, with Namrata Bhandari serving as co-producer, Laxman Karmacharya as line producer, and Jeevanath Gautam as chief assistant director. It features cinematography by Rahul Rai, editing by Ram Prasad Chaudhary and Bipin Malla, and action direction by Kumar Maharjan.
National Cine Group Pvt. Ltd. will distribute the film in Nepal, while OSR Digital serves as its official digital partner.
