Kathmandu: Filmmaker Samrat Basnet has officially announced his new feature film, Durga, which he will both produce and direct.
The announcement was made with the release of the film’s theme poster, featuring a young woman standing alone in front of a Durga temple with a trident (trishul) placed at the entrance. The symbolic imagery hints at a strong connection between the central character and the sacred symbol, while the film’s title suggests that the story revolves around a character named Durga.
The predominance of red in the poster—from the temple to the woman’s attire—also suggests themes of violence, sacrifice, or intense conflict. However, the production team has not yet disclosed the film’s storyline or the identity of its lead character.
Director Basnet said that the cast will be announced soon, with some performers expected to be selected through auditions. “We will reveal the main cast shortly. We are also planning to select a few actors through auditions,” Basnet said. “The film will be mythological.”
The film is being produced under the Kusmanda and Global Reel Motion Pictures banners, with the screenplay written by Nischal Dhungana. Durga is scheduled for a 90-day shooting period across Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan. Filming is expected to begin in the first week of Ashoj (late September).
Basnet’s most recent directorial venture, Lakhey, was recently released on YouTube after its theatrical run.
