Kathmandu: Theatre play ‘Shree Bijjo Bhoot – Katha Sudurko’, currently being staged at Mandala Theatre in Thapagaun, Kathmandu, presents the culture, folk beliefs and emotional struggles of Nepal’s Far-Western region.
The play features Sneha Joshi alongside Aditya Mishra, Sushmita Kunwar, Bhupi Luhar, Umesh Sunam, Agnishree Bishawkarma, Samriddhi Nepal and others. The actors bring the region’s distinctive language, mannerisms and lifestyle to the stage.
Written by Diwas Nath and directed by Buddhi Tamang and Akash Nepali, the play is set in the 2050s B.S. and follows Gauri, a young woman whose father has been away in India for years. When a man named Hari promises to help her find her father in Mumbai, Gauri begins a journey that exposes her to uncertainty, emotional struggles and social realities.
The story explores the lives of women waiting for loved ones who have migrated abroad for work, while also addressing questions surrounding trust, social expectations and women’s vulnerability.
Humour and emotion are blended throughout the production, while songs, traditional dances, costumes and local folk beliefs add depth to the storytelling. The title ‘Shree Bijjo Bhoot’ is also connected to a local belief from Ninglai village of Dadeldhura, where people traditionally believe that wrongdoing cannot go unpunished in the territory of Bijjo Bhoot.
