Jhuma Limbu is a Nepalese singer, folk musician, and researcher dedicated to preserving and promoting Nepal’s traditional music. She is particularly known for her work with Limbu folk traditions, indigenous musical practices, and traditional instruments.Born in Dhungesaghu, Taplejung, in eastern Nepal, Jhuma grew up as the youngest of six siblings. Her musical journey began through Dhan Nach, a traditional Limbu dance performed with folk songs known as Palam. After completing her SLC in 2001, she moved to Kathmandu, passed the Radio Nepal voice test, and continued her education in the arts.While studying at Lalit Kala Campus, she trained in classical music under Chandan Kumar Shrestha and released her debut album, ‘Eh Saila’. She later became a student of renowned musician Amber Gurung, who had a major influence on her musical career. In his honor, she released ‘Amber Sangeet’, an album featuring compositions by Gurung.In 2014, Limbu released ‘Khaasaam’, an album inspired by Limbu culture that featured both solo and ensemble performances. Beyond performing, she has conducted extensive research and documentation on indigenous singing traditions and traditional musical instruments found across Nepal.Limbu is also associated with the Raithane Sangeet Abhiyan, a movement focused on conserving and promoting Nepal’s indigenous and folk music. Her contribution to folk music preservation has earned her recognition and honors from various organizations.In 2022, she co-composed the music for the Nepali film ‘Jaar’ with Ganga Thapa. Through her singing, research, and cultural work, Jhuma Limbu has established herself as an important figure in the preservation of Nepal’s rich musical heritage.
