Sajjan Raj Vaidya
Description
Sajjan Raj Vaidya (born September 10, 1993) is a versatile Nepali singer, songwriter, composer, and music producer known for blending modern styles with traditional Nepali music elements to create a distinct sound. Born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal, Sajjan credits his musical journey to his family. As he himself has shared, “My story with music began with my family. My mother taught me how to sing, my father taught us to listen to music in all its forms, and my brother taught me to evolve with music.” This deep-rooted family influence is reflected in his diverse musical sensibilities.
His early inspirations span across multiple genres and include artists like The Eagles, UB40, Linkin Park, and Karna Das. He began performing live during his school years and gradually started sharing his music through Facebook, gaining an online following.
Sajjan’s official debut came in 2014 with the release of his single “Aaja Matra.” However, it was “Hawaijahaj” (2016) that marked his breakthrough into the mainstream Nepali music scene. The song, paired with a music video produced by Fuzz Factory Productions, showcased his signature style and lyrical depth. He continued releasing hits like “Mooskaan” and “Anountho Mutu” in 2018, further solidifying his place as one of Nepal’s leading indie artists.
On January 1, 2019, he released “Hataarindai, Bataasindai,” a song whose video featured both a heterosexual and a homosexual couple. This was a bold and rare representation in Nepali media, especially with its depiction of a gay couple’s romantic intimacy. Sajjan revealed that while the song wasn’t originally written with a specific video in mind, the team felt the lack of LGBTQ representation in Nepal was an issue that needed to be addressed. As a result, the video became a meaningful statement in support of the LGBTQ community. The song was later embraced as an anthem during Nepal’s first official pride parade in July 2019.
In 2018, Sajjan launched Katha, a video series on his YouTube channel. Katha features live acoustic renditions of his songs (and occasionally others’), paired with behind-the-scenes stories and insights into their creation. The series provides fans a deeper look into his creative process and personal connection with music.
Sajjan Raj Vaidya is recognized not just for his soulful voice and genre-defying sound but also for his bold storytelling and progressive vision. His music often addresses themes of love, identity, self-reflection, and social consciousness, making him a prominent voice in the evolution of modern Nepali music.
