Kathmandu – The filming of the movie “Captain Saab” is currently underway with a grand set constructed in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area. The set has been designed to reflect what Kathmandu looked like during the 2030s and 2040s Bikram Sambat (circa 1970s–1980s AD).
The set recreates the architecture of that era, showing a cluster of similarly styled old white houses. According to the production team, this setup portrays the kind of buildings that existed in Kathmandu during those decades.
“In the midst of a busy city like Kathmandu, we obviously can’t build dozens of new permanent structures. So instead, we’ve focused on coloring and styling the houses to evoke the feel of the 2030s and 2040s BS,” said director Dipendra K. Khanal. “We’ve also designed the costumes to match that period, making sure everything looks as authentic as possible.” He added that care was taken to avoid making the set look artificial.
Photos of the set show old, white buildings of a similar style, vintage vehicles on the roads, members of the Newar community trading goods in kharpan (shoulder baskets) and doko (bamboo baskets), and characters dressed in period-appropriate costumes that reflect the fashion of the time.
“We’re trying to show the era that the story is set in. We’re doing everything we can within the limits of our budget and craftsmanship,” said Khanal. “That’s why we’ve gone with a fully built set.”
The filming of “Captain Saab” began last Saturday (Shrawan 10). In addition to Kathmandu, the film will be shot in Dhunkharka and Bethanchok of Kavre, as well as Chitwan and Birgunj.
Directed by Dipendra K. Khanal, “Captain Saab” is a biopic of Captain Rameshwar Thapa—a pilot, businessman, and media entrepreneur. The film is presented by Patkatha Production, Yarsa Studio, and Rich Entertainment. The lead roles are played by actors Khagendra Lamichhane, Saugat Malla, actress Surakshya Panta, and Sanjog Rasaili.
The producers of the film include director Dipendra K. Khanal himself, along with Karan Shrestha and Sristima Khanal. The executive producer is Sirjana Napit. The cinematography is handled by Krishna Bahadur Thapa, with Sougat Basnet as the chief assistant director. Royal Bhimsen (Trident Concept) is in charge of the poster and publicity design, Eki Thekpa is the production designer, and Rohit Raj Gautam and Bishnu Budhathoki are the production managers.
