Kathmandu — The production company behind the historic hit Purna Bahadur Ko Sarangi has unveiled its new film Roll No. 1. Produced by Seven Seas Cinema, owned by Binod Paudel, the film’s teaser was released on Thursday.

Following the teaser’s release, many viewers noted a resemblance in tone and flavor to Purna Bahadur Ko Sarangi. While the emotional depth feels familiar, Roll No. 1 tells a different story—centered on the life of a student.

The teaser presents a poignant narrative of a father who sacrifices his own dreams for his son’s happiness, only to face disappointment when those dreams remain unfulfilled. It highlights the harsh realities of relying on scholarships for education and the pain of losing such opportunities. The film also reflects how societal pressure to excel academically for respect can marginalize students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Through its narrative, the teaser exposes a bitter truth: the government rule requiring students to top their class to secure scholarships often leaves many deserving students behind. It also explores how families place their hopes and aspirations on children, and the psychological toll on a child who struggles despite their efforts.

The film signals that it aims to tell the story of many economically disadvantaged Nepalis, focusing on student psychology and the negative impacts of the current education system.

Directed by John Yonjan, Roll No. 1 stars Mukun Bhusal, Sushank Mainali, Renu Yogi, and Srijana Adhikari in lead roles. Child actors include Nirvik Regmi, Rinchen Lama, Sanyam Katuwal, and Sijal Shrestha.

The film is produced by Binod Paudel and Janvi Paudel, with co-producers Chhatramaya Giri and Ramesh Chaulagain. The screenplay is written by Mahesh Dawadi, and cinematography is handled by Shiva Ram Shrestha. Filming took place in various scenic and rural locations of Myagdi district.

The film features music by Prashant Siwakoti, background score by Rohit Shakya, and editing by Madan Ghimire. According to producer Paudel, Roll No. 1 will be released simultaneously in Nepal and abroad on May 28 (Jestha 15), coinciding with Republic Day. Distribution will be handled by Rich Entertainment and JM Cinema.
