In the vibrant world of Nepali folk music, one name continues to enchant listeners with her melodious voice – Purna Kala Bc. Born on February 24, 1988 (Falgun 12, 2045 B.S.) in Gulariya Municipality-1, Bardiya, Bc has become a synonym for Nepali folk and Dohori music.
Although she officially began her musical journey in 2009 (2066 B.S.), Purnakala rose to national fame in 2012 (2069 B.S.) with the release of her hit song “Dadai Bisauni.” The immense popularity of this song not only brought her into the spotlight but also established her as one of the busiest folk singers in Nepal.
“I had sung many songs before ‘Dadai Bisauni,’ but I never got the recognition. When this song was released, it gave me a sense of pride as an artist. Hearing it play everywhere was a moment of pure joy,” Purna Kala shared with Artist Khabar. “Even today, people often introduce me as the singer of that song.”
Over the years, Purna Kala Bc has lent her voice to over 5,000 folk songs, a monumental feat in Nepali music. During her peak years, she even recorded up to 12 songs in a single day, a testament to her dedication and popularity. Even today, she continues to record at least 20 songs per month.
Some of her most beloved hits include “Mayaluko Sahar,” “Jaya Jaya Hos,” “Jugjani Maya Garaula,” “Rundai Rundai Timro Sahar,” “Sanisar,” “Nirmaya Aauchhau Audainau,” “Maili,” and “Phul Mayama Nabhul.”
Bc’s vocal versatility allows her to perform a wide range of regional folk styles. She is highly in demand for Sudurpaschim’s traditional Deuda songs and has performed in countless stage shows across Nepal. Her musical journey has also taken her to international audiences in Japan, Australia, the UK, Dubai, and Malaysia, proudly representing Nepali folk music on the global stage.
In 2014 (2071 B.S.), Purnakala married Dhan Kp from Pokhara, and the couple now resides in Kathmandu. With her sweet voice, diverse repertoire, and relentless dedication, Purnakala Bc has firmly established herself as an irreplaceable gem of contemporary Nepali folk music.
