Kathmandu: Renowned Nepali film actor and singer, and Indian Idol winner Prashant Tamang, has passed away at the age of 43. According to reports, he died on Sunday due to a heart attack at his own apartment in Delhi. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the Nepali and Indian entertainment industries, leaving fans, artists, and well-wishers in deep mourning.
Prashant Tamang was a well-known name in Nepali cinema, particularly remembered for his roles in patriotic and socially rooted films. He gained widespread recognition for his performance in director Narayan Rayamajhi’s blockbuster film “Gorkha Paltan 2,” which became a major commercial success and further strengthened his position in the Nepali film industry. He had earlier made his acting debut with “Gorkha Paltan.”
Apart from acting, Prashant was equally active in music. He made his debut as a playback singer in Nepali cinema through the film “Himmat 2.” Over the years, he appeared in several popular Nepali films including “Angalo Mayako,” “Kin Mayama,” “Dhadkan Bhitra,” “Nishani,” and “Paradeshi” Parts 1 and 2. As a playback singer, his voice featured in films such as “Dil,” “Anmol Chhan,” and “Himmat 2,” earning him appreciation for his soulful singing.
Expanding his career beyond Nepali cinema, Prashant Tamang also stepped into Bollywood. He made his Bollywood debut in Salman Khan–starrer “Battle of Galwan.” The film’s shooting had already been completed, and Prashant was reportedly preparing for the dubbing process at the time of his death, making his passing even more tragic for the project and its team.
Born in Darjeeling, India, Prashant’s life journey was inspirational. Before entering the entertainment world, he served for some time in the Kolkata Police, showcasing his disciplined background. His breakthrough came after winning Indian Idol, which turned him into a household name across India and Nepal. In 2007, his debut album “Dhanyabad” was released. Songs like “Veer Gorkhali” and “Asare Mahinama” remain among his most popular and beloved tracks.
On a personal note, Prashant Tamang married air hostess Geeta Thapa in 2011, and the couple has a daughter. He was known to be a devoted family man who balanced his personal and professional life with humility.
Prashant Tamang’s untimely death marks a huge loss to Nepali cinema and music. A versatile artist with a powerful voice and strong screen presence, his contributions will continue to live on through his films and songs. The entertainment fraternity and his countless fans remember him not only as a talented performer but also as a proud representative of the Gorkhali spirit.
