Kathmandu: Acclaimed stage and film actor Bijay Baral, known for his powerful and realistic performances, has now stepped into a new creative role. Baral has made his singing debut with the song “Rule of Law” (Vidhiko Shasan), marking a significant expansion of his artistic journey.
More than a musical experiment, the song emerges as a strong voice against prevailing political distortions and systemic failures. Written by Shaurabh Karki and composed by Prashant Shivakoti, the song reflects Nepal’s contemporary political landscape. It draws particular inspiration from the “Gen Z” movement that took place in Kathmandu on Bhadra 23 and 24, highlighting the issues raised by the youth during the protests.
The song emphasizes that national development and prosperity cannot be driven by individual whims or personal power, but rather through a structured system and true rule of law. Emotions ranging from the 1990 People’s Movement to the political change of 2006/07, and extending to recent youth-led uprisings, are woven into the lyrics.
Speaking about his first-ever singing experience, Baral shared that he is not a professional singer but was encouraged by close friends who felt his voice suited the theme. Accepting their confidence, he decided to give it an honest try. He clarified that the song is neither in support of nor against any individual, but a satire and warning directed at power structures and governance systems, aiming to show how golden dreams are being reduced to ashes—and how hope can still be reignited.
The music video is as impactful as the audio itself. Conceptualized by Manish Raut, it features real images and archival footage from Nepal’s major political movements. From the 1990 uprising to the 2006/07 People’s Movement, and scenes of police suppression and youth anger during the recent Gen Z protests, the visuals give the song the weight of a historical documentary rather than just a musical release.
As more established Nepali film artists openly engage with social and political issues, Baral’s move reinforces the idea that artists are not merely on-screen performers but also conscious citizens. “Rule of Law” is expected to resonate with citizens still waiting for good governance and meaningful development. The song also pays tribute to those injured and martyred during the Bhadra 24 movement, while calling for the fulfillment of the remaining demands.
On the acting front, Bijay Baral has recently been signed for director Saroj Poudel’s upcoming film “Sindure Jatra.” Actress Anjana Baraili has been finalized opposite him. This marks their second collaboration with director Poudel, following the historic blockbuster “Purna Bahadurko Sarangi,” which went on to become one of the highest-grossing films in Nepali cinema history.
