KATHMANDU — Actor Pushpa Khadka has been officially signed as the lead in the much-anticipated Nepali film Maharajdhiraj, replacing Paul Shah, who was initially expected to star in the project but stepped away due to scheduling conflicts.
The production team announced Khadka’s casting on the occasion of the Nepali New Year, unveiling a special poster that presents him in two contrasting and powerful looks. In one, he appears in full royal attire—wearing a crown, holding a sceptre, and dressed as a king—while in another, he is shown in a frail, vulnerable state, symbolizing a deeper, layered narrative.
Accompanied by a meaningful slogan—“May every step of good deeds and goodwill stay with us, and may conflict and deceit never come near”—the poster hints at a story rich in symbolism and emotional depth.
In an unusual move, Khadka signed the film using a blood thumbprint instead of a conventional signature, underlining his commitment to the role. He has also pledged not to engage in any other films, music videos, or even social media content throughout the production period, calling this the biggest challenge of his career.
The film’s visual tone suggests elements of a thriller or period drama, raising expectations among audiences. Directed by Sen, the project is described as his dream venture and will feature a large ensemble cast of around 80 actors, blending veteran and new-generation performers.
The lineup includes Neer Shah, Aryan Sigdel, Ramesh Upreti, Barsha Raut, Usha Rajak, Hiubala Gautam, Jay Kishan Basnet, Shishir Bhandari, Gajit Bista, and Asha Poudel, among others.
Presented by Biraj Bista, the film emphasizes a strong cast as a key strength. Cinematography will be handled by Nabaraj Thapa.
Produced under the banner of Chhatreshwor Management Pvt. Ltd., the film is written by director Sen, whose previous film Premganj received critical acclaim. Producers include Rabi Khadka, Shivraj Poudel, and Topendra Bista.
Filming is set to begin from the second week of Baisakh, starting at Shreelanka Island in Sunsari, followed by shoots in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Kirtipur.
According to the production team, Maharajadhiraj is targeting a nationwide release during Dashain, aiming for the auspicious occasion of Phulpati.
